B.Sc. in Civil Engineering

Building the Future of Infrastructure and Sustainable Development

Civil Engineering students at WUB

Program Overview

The field of Civil Engineering is probably the broadest of all engineering disciplines. It deals with the creation, improvement, and protection of the built environment, providing facilities for living, industry, and transportation. These include large buildings, roads, bridges, canals, railroads, airports, water supply systems, dams, irrigation networks, harbors, docks, aqueducts, tunnels, and other engineered constructions. As such, the duty of a civil engineer involves nearly every aspect of society.

Like any other developing country, Bangladesh has a significant need for infrastructure development. Since the country’s independence, many government and non-government projects have been implemented, involving a large number of civil engineers over the years. However, much remains to be done in the years ahead to further strengthen the nation’s infrastructure. Moreover, once the infrastructure is built, maintaining it at a standard level is also a major task. These development activities are impossible to carry out without the direct involvement of civil engineers. Therefore, there is a strong demand and excellent opportunities for civil engineers, particularly in Bangladesh, to contribute to these projects and build rewarding careers.

In response to this societal need, the Department of Civil Engineering at the World University of Bangladesh offers a comprehensive undergraduate program in Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering has established itself as one of the leading departments within the Faculty of Science and Engineering since its inception in April 2004. The first batch of students graduated on schedule in August 2008. Since then, more than a hundred batches of students have successfully graduated and are now serving in government and private sectors. Some of our alumni have also pursued or completed postgraduate studies abroad.

Currently, the department offers a 4-year undergraduate program in Civil Engineering. The curriculum covers all major areas of the discipline, eventually guiding students to identify their preferred field of specialization. To ensure quality education, the Department of Civil Engineering has adopted the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) system.
