Civil Engineering Students Explore Real-World Challenges Through Hands-On Training on Sub-Soil Investigation

Students in a lecture hall

On July 12, 2025, the Department of Civil Engineering at the World University of Bangladesh (WUB) organized a field visit for students of the 98A Batch, providing them with practical exposure to sub-soil investigation techniques for the proposed twelve-storied academic building of WUB. Guided by Dr. Partha Saha, Senior Assistant Professor, the visit allowed students to gain hands-on experience in geotechnical fieldwork, strengthening their understanding of professional engineering practices.

The training primarily focused on borehole drilling for soil sampling, field testing, and soil analysis, which are essential processes in geotechnical engineering. Students observed the entire procedure of soil boring and sample collection, along with the use of traditional equipment in sub-soil investigations. They also learned to identify soil stratification—a critical factor in understanding the load-bearing capacity of soil layers for large-scale construction.

By directly engaging in these activities, students were able to connect their theoretical classroom knowledge with practical applications, gaining valuable insights into the complexities of ground investigation. This hands-on approach offered them a clearer understanding of site-specific soil behavior, which plays a decisive role in the safe and efficient design of civil engineering structures.

The field visit not only provided exposure to the technical aspects of soil testing but also highlighted the real-world challenges faced in geotechnical investigations, such as equipment handling, environmental factors, and accuracy in sample collection. Such experiences are considered vital in preparing students to become competent professionals capable of solving engineering problems in real-life contexts.

In addition to technical training, the visit underscored the department’s commitment to experiential learning. By creating opportunities for field-based exposure, WUB’s Civil Engineering Department ensures that its students are equipped with both academic knowledge and practical skills. This dual approach strengthens their foundation in civil and geotechnical engineering while aligning with global standards of engineering education.

Through this initiative, the Department of Civil Engineering reaffirmed its goal of nurturing graduates who are not only technically proficient but also industry-ready, capable of contributing to the development of Bangladesh’s infrastructure sector.
